Teeth Whitening

Why are my teeth stained and yellow?

Believe it or not, your teeth yellow as part of the natural aging process. As you get older, the outer layer of your teeth, called enamel, begins to chip, crack, and flake away. Over time, this reveals the inner portion of your teeth, known as dentin. Dentin is naturally yellow in color, so the more visible it becomes, the yellower your teeth appear.

There are other factors that contribute to yellow or stained teeth as well, including:

  • Smoking
  • Using chewing tobacco
  • Drinking coffee
  • Drinking red wine
  • Eating tomato-based pasta sauce

Your oral hygiene also plays a role. For example, if you don’t brush, floss, and visit the dentist regularly, you’re also more likely to develop yellow or discolored teeth.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a type of cosmetic dentistry used to eradicate stains and discoloration from the surface of your teeth. The majority of modern teeth whitening treatments use carbamide peroxide, a safe and effective chemical, to perform this process. Carbamide peroxide is a harmless byproduct of hydrogen peroxide that presents few side effects. In addition, it provides near-instant results.

Are there different types of teeth whitening treatment?

At Advanced Dentistry of New York, the team offers two different types of teeth whitening treatments, including:

Philips Zoom chairside teeth whitening

Philips Zoom chairside teeth whitening can make your teeth up to *eight shades whiter in a single, one-hour treatment session. Prior to Philips Zoom whitening, your dentist covers your gums and tongue with a rubber dam. Next, your dentist carefully paints a bleaching solution to the surface of your teeth. After the solution sinks in, your dentist points a special light at your teeth that triggers a chemical bleaching reaction. Your dentist repeats these steps three or four times, until achieving the desired results.

Take-home teeth whitening trays

Take-home teeth whitening trays take a little longer to whiten your teeth, but they’re just as effective as chairside treatments. You put a small bit of bleaching solution in your trays each night and wear them for between three to four hours. Slowly but surely, your take-home whitening trays eradicate stains and discoloration, transforming your smile to a whiter, brighter condition.

Is teeth whitening treatment permanent?

Teeth whitening treatment isn’t permanent, but it can provide results that last for approximately six months at a time. To extend the results of your teeth whitening treatment, the team at Advanced Dentistry of New York recommends brushing and flossing regularly, quitting tobacco use, and avoiding dark-colored beverages such as coffee and red wine.

Don’t let yellow or discolored teeth negatively impact your confidence and self-esteem. Request your teeth whitening appointment at Advanced Dentistry of New York by calling the office today or booking one online.
